The Philadelphia Inquirer said of our premiere of Thomas Lloyd’s work, “Sometimes you just don’t see a significant piece coming...While it effectively airs many philosophical questions that keep your mind busy long after the performance, it is never weighed down by them, and is rich in musical substance."
This breakthrough work for sixteen men, three women, and chamber ensemble probes the life and death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer through a series of scenes from his physical and spiritual lives; it is not the story of the end of his life, but, rather, of the great moral and ethical questions he faced that led to that end - and thus Tom's use of Lutheran chorales, spirituals, and Schubert songs in the eclectic musical tapestry; they were the music by which Bonhoeffer lived.
