Song of the Human (world premiere)
by Peter Wyer
hosted by John Schaefer and broadcast on WNYC’s New Sounds Live
with Thomas Mesa, cello
Was I dead? Was I asleep?
We sing two classic works from our repertoire – Santa Ratniece’s horo horo hata hata, a meditation on the souls of animals, and John Tavener’s prayerful Svyati in which the cello becomes a cantor for the choir – and add a substantial new work with a world premiere of Peter Wyer. His Song of the Human is an immersive sound installation that places speakers above, below and around the main plaza of The Winter Garden at Brookfield Place, with The Crossing at its center.
When we speak, we speak in music. But something rather wonderful happens when we remove words and listen only to that music; potentially divisive elements such as race, nationality, religion, and gender all disappear. What you’re left with is what I call the Song of the Human.
– Peter Wyer
